● The short answer
Not directly. Google has said accessibility is not a direct ranking factor. But much of the work overlaps with SEO: descriptive alt text, logical headings, meaningful link text, captions and transcripts, fast pages and clean HTML help search engines and AI crawlers understand your content. Accessible sites also tend to keep visitors longer and convert better.
Key takeaways
- Google has said accessibility is not a direct ranking factor.
- Many accessibility fixes, like alt text, headings and link text, also help search engines and AI understand pages.
- Captions and transcripts turn media into indexable text.
What Google has actually said
In a 2022 Search Central office-hours session, Google's John Mueller was asked whether accessibility improvements give a direct SEO advantage. His answer: "No, not really," adding that it is "not something that we would pick up and use as a direct ranking factor," while noting that accessibility still matters because people who cannot use a site will not recommend it. That is the honest baseline: no ranking bonus for passing an audit.
We are not aware of Google changing that position since, so as of late 2026 we treat it as still accurate. Treat any vendor claim of an "accessibility ranking boost" with skepticism.
The more useful point is that Google reads pages much like assistive technology does. Its image guidance calls alt text "the most important attribute" for describing images, and says it "improves accessibility for people who can't see images on web pages." Google uses that text, together with computer vision and page content, to understand images. A screen reader and a crawler both depend on the same thing: meaning expressed in the code, not just in how the page looks. A page that only makes sense visually is hard for both.

Talk to usMore questions
Does alt text help SEO?
Yes. Google calls alt text the most important attribute for describing images and uses it alongside computer vision and page content to understand them. Good alt text helps image search visibility and accessibility at the same time. Describe the image in context, and avoid stuffing keywords, which Google treats as a poor experience.
Will an accessibility overlay improve my SEO?
Not in any meaningful way. Overlays add a script on top of your site and typically do not fix the underlying HTML that search engines read. Some can slow pages down. Fixing alt text, headings and structure in the source code is what helps both SEO and accessibility.
