How do I rank higher in Google Maps?

● The short answer

Google Maps ranks local businesses on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change where a searcher is standing, so focus on the other two: pick the right primary category, complete every profile field, earn a steady flow of genuine reviews and reply to them, and build a strong website and local links that prove you are well known.

Key takeaways

  • Google ranks Maps results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says you cannot pay for better organic local rank.
  • Your primary category is one of the strongest levers you control.
  • A steady flow of recent reviews, with owner replies, supports both ranking and customer choice.

The three factors Google says it uses

Google is unusually open about this. Its own help page says local results are based mainly on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the location in the query) and prominence (how well known you are). Google lists links to your business from other websites and your review count and rating as prominence signals. It also states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

That last point matters. Anyone selling a guaranteed Maps position is selling something Google says does not exist. Ads can appear above or inside map results, but they are labeled and they are not organic rank.

More questions

How long does it take to rank higher in Google Maps?

Fixes like the primary category or a missing service can show results in weeks. Review and link building usually take three to six months to change your position in a competitive area. Google does not publish timelines, and results vary by market density, so be skeptical of anyone promising a date or a specific spot.

Does adding keywords to my business name help?

It can lift rankings briefly, which is why people do it, but Google's guidelines prohibit adding unnecessary information to your name and list it as grounds for suspension. Competitors can also report it. Use your real-world name and put keywords into categories, services and your website instead.
