● The short answer
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that serves your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign, with Google's AI deciding placement and bids toward your conversion goals. It can work well once you have reliable conversion tracking and enough volume. Without those, it tends to spend on cheap placements you cannot easily see.
Key takeaways
- Performance Max serves across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign.
- It depends on accurate conversion tracking and enough monthly conversions to learn.
- Brand exclusions, negative keywords, URL expansion controls and placement reports help keep it honest.
What Performance Max does
Performance Max (PMax) is a goal-based campaign. Google describes it as a way to reach all Google Ads inventory from a single campaign, with its AI optimizing toward the conversion actions you choose. You supply assets (headlines, descriptions, images, video, logos), audience signals and optional search themes. Google decides where and when to show what.
According to Google, it serves on YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, and you can set a target ROAS or target CPA. Eligible ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can also appear within AI Overviews, a placement you cannot target or exclude on its own.

Talk to usMore questions
Will Performance Max replace my Search campaigns?
It can overlap with them, but Google positions it as complementary. When a search query exactly matches a keyword in a Search campaign, the Search campaign is generally preferred. In practice, many advertisers keep Search campaigns for their core, high-intent terms and use PMax to extend reach. Watch for overlap in reporting.
Why is Performance Max spending on Display and video?
Because it optimizes across all channels toward your goal, and those placements can look efficient on paper. If your conversion goal is too easy, such as a page view, it will chase cheap traffic. Tighten conversion goals, add placement exclusions, review channel reporting and supply strong video so those placements earn their spend.
