The challenge

A once-in-a-lifetime weekend, and a flood of questions. How many people came? How did they get there? What did it do for local business? The answers were scattered across police statements, transit notices, news stories and Baiku's own bike share data, and the window to answer them was a few days.

The idea

Make one place that answers every question with a source, feels like the weekend did, and is easy for a fan on a phone and an AI engine to read. Fun first, rigorous underneath.

Three moves that made it work

  1. A story you swipeA cover with one number and one button, then 16 cards on a phone: the final out, the crowd, the business, getting there, the toast.
  2. Play before the payoffGuess the crowd before the number appears, flip a card to see what a projection isn't, then share a card or play a 30-second game.
  3. Built to be quotedBracketed links to 36 sources, NewsArticle, Event and Dataset structured data, one canonical address and a Spanish edition.

Timeline

  • Wed · Oct 28

The final out. The Brewers win the World Series.

  • Fri · Oct 30

The parade and rally. Bike share checkouts more than double.

  • Sun · Nov 1

The report goes live on baiku.org, in English and Spanish.

  • Mon · Nov 2

Fan photo gallery, two games and share buttons added.

  • Nov 3 to 5

New sources folded in as the story kept unfolding.

What makes it citable

  • Every number links to a named source.
  • Estimates, projections and preliminary figures are labeled.
  • Structured data for the article, the event and the dataset.
  • Indexable, in the sitemap, one canonical address.
  • Social embeds load only on tap, so the page stays fast and private.
