Does Claude recommend businesses, and how does it find them?

● The short answer

Yes. Claude recommends businesses when people ask, drawing on its training data and, when web search is on, live results it retrieves and cites. Anthropic runs separate bots for training (ClaudeBot), search indexing (Claude-SearchBot) and user-requested fetches (Claude-User). To be recommended, allow the search bots, publish clear factual pages and earn the independent mentions Claude can find and verify.

Key takeaways

  • Claude recommends businesses using its training data plus live web search when enabled.
  • Anthropic separates training (ClaudeBot) from search (Claude-SearchBot) and user fetches (Claude-User), so you can block one and allow the others.
  • Anthropic said in February 2026 that Claude would stay ad-free, so visibility comes only from what Claude can find.

How Claude knows about businesses

Claude, made by Anthropic, answers from two places. Its model was trained on a large body of text with a cutoff date, so it knows well-documented businesses and brands. For current, local or specific questions, Claude can search the web, read pages and cite them in its answer. That live search is what matters most for a business that is not a household name.

Anthropic has not published which search index powers Claude's web search. In March 2025, TechCrunch reported evidence that it used Brave Search, including Brave appearing on Anthropic's subprocessor list, but Anthropic did not confirm it publicly at the time. We would not build strategy around one provider. Being well indexed across the major search engines is the safer bet.

Claude is also increasingly used as an agent: reading documents, comparing vendors, drafting shortlists for a procurement team. In those workflows it may open your website directly through Claude-User to check a fact. A page that loads quickly, puts key facts in plain HTML text and does not hide pricing or capabilities behind scripts or forms is easier for it to read and quote accurately. More questions

Does blocking ClaudeBot remove me from Claude answers?

Not by itself. Anthropic describes ClaudeBot as the training crawler. Its search visibility depends on Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. If you block only ClaudeBot, Claude can still retrieve and cite your pages through web search, although your newer content would not contribute to future model training.

Which search engine does Claude use?

Anthropic has not publicly detailed its search providers. TechCrunch reported in 2025 that evidence pointed to Brave Search. Because this could change or involve several providers, the durable approach is to be indexed and well represented across major search engines and to allow Anthropic's search bots.
