● The short answer
To show up in Google AI Overviews, your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search; Google says no special markup or AI file is required. From there, the pages that get used answer a specific sub-question clearly, are easy to crawl, demonstrate real expertise and come from a site Google already trusts for that topic.
Key takeaways
- Google says AI Overviews require only that a page be indexed and snippet-eligible; no special markup or file is needed.
- Query fan-out means focused pages answering specific sub-questions get more chances to be cited.
- Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside overall Web search data without a separate breakout.
What Google actually requires
Google's documentation is unusually direct here. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements, no special schema.org type and no AI text file. Inclusion is still not guaranteed, just as ranking is not.
The stakes are high. Google said in July 2025 that AI Overviews had more than 2 billion monthly users, and in 2026 it reported AI Mode crossing a billion users. When an Overview appears, it often sits above every organic result.

Talk to usMore questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?
Only partly. Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls for how content appears in Search, including AI features. Restricting snippets also limits your regular search listings. Google-Extended does not affect Search or AI Overviews; it covers Gemini model training and certain Gemini grounding uses.
Do I need schema markup to be in AI Overviews?
No. Google states there is no special schema.org structured data required. Accurate structured data still helps Google understand your business, products and pages, and it powers other rich results. Treat it as good hygiene that supports understanding rather than as a requirement for being cited.
