● The short answer
Schema markup helps AI search indirectly: it makes your business, products and pages easier for search engines to understand and connect, which feeds the systems AI assistants draw on. It is not a ticket into AI answers. Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and markup must match what is visible on the page.
Key takeaways
- Schema markup labels the facts on your pages so machines can understand and connect them.
- Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and markup must match visible content.
- Its main AI value is entity clarity and clean, consistent facts, not direct placement in answers.
What schema markup does
Schema markup is structured data, usually written in JSON-LD, that labels the facts on a page using the shared schema.org vocabulary. Instead of a search engine inferring that "Open 7am to 3pm" is your hours, the markup says so explicitly. It can describe your organization, locations, products, prices, events, reviews, people and articles.
Search engines use structured data to understand pages, connect them to entities in their knowledge graphs and power rich results such as product prices, event dates and star ratings in listings.

Does ChatGPT read schema markup?
OpenAI has not published whether or how its search systems use structured data. Its crawler fetches the page, so the markup is available, but the company's public guidance focuses on crawl access and clear content. Treat schema as helpful for consistency across all engines rather than as a known ChatGPT ranking factor.
Is FAQPage schema still worth adding?
It can still help machines parse genuine question-and-answer content, but Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023 to well-known authoritative government and health sites. Most businesses will not get the visual result. Add it only for real FAQs on the page, never for content that is not visible.
