● The short answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools can pull a direct answer from it and credit your business. It means asking the questions customers ask, answering them plainly in the first lines, supporting the answer with detail and proof, and marking pages up so machines understand them.
Key takeaways
- AEO shapes content so search engines and AI tools can lift a direct, credited answer.
- Lead with a standalone answer, then add detail, structure and visible proof.
- AEO and GEO overlap almost entirely; AEO is page-focused, GEO also covers reputation and entity data.
Where AEO came from
AEO started before ChatGPT. When Google began showing featured snippets and voice assistants started reading one answer aloud, marketers realized the goal was no longer just ranking: it was being the answer. AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot have made that goal far bigger, so AEO and GEO now describe nearly the same work.
If there is a distinction, AEO focuses on the page and the question: is this content shaped so a machine can lift a clean answer? GEO is broader and includes reputation, entity data and mentions across the web.
Think of it this way: AEO asks whether your page is the best possible answer to a specific question. GEO asks whether the engines trust you enough to use that answer and name you. You need both, and the page-level craft is the part you control most directly, which is why it is a sensible place to start.

Does FAQ schema still help?
It helps machines understand your page structure, but Google restricted FAQ rich results in 2023 to well-known government and health sites, so most businesses will not see the expandable display in search. Keep the markup accurate and matching visible content, and value FAQs mainly for readers and AI retrieval rather than snippet appearance.
How long should an answer be?
The direct answer should be about 40 to 70 words, long enough to be useful on its own and short enough to quote. The page around it can be several hundred words covering factors, exceptions and follow-up questions. Depth supports trust; the short answer earns the citation.
