● The short answer
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, cite and recommend. It combines technical access for AI crawlers, clearly structured answer content, consistent entity data and third-party mentions that the models treat as evidence.
Key takeaways
- GEO is the work of being found, cited and accurately described inside AI-generated answers.
- It overlaps heavily with SEO but puts more weight on clarity, entity consistency and third-party evidence.
- AI Overviews reached more than 2 billion monthly users in 2025, so this is a mainstream channel, not a niche.
A working definition
Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is about being part of the answer when someone asks an AI tool a question. Traditional search shows a list of links. A generative engine writes a response, often naming a few businesses or products and citing a handful of sources. GEO is the effort to be one of those names and sources, and to make sure what the AI says about you is accurate.
The term was popularized by a 2023 academic paper from researchers at Princeton and other universities, and the industry has since used it loosely to cover everything from AI crawler access to brand reputation. You will also hear AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO and "AI SEO." The labels overlap. What matters is the work.

Talk to usMore questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap so much that most people use them interchangeably. AEO, answer engine optimization, grew out of featured snippets and voice search, while GEO was coined for generative AI tools. In practice both mean structuring your content and reputation so machines can pull a direct answer and name your business in it.
Do I need to stop doing SEO to do GEO?
No. Most AI assistants retrieve information from search indexes, so pages that are not indexed or not trusted in search rarely get cited. GEO is better thought of as SEO plus a stronger focus on clear answers, consistent entity data, third-party mentions and measuring what AI tools actually say about you.
