● The short answer
Entity SEO is the practice of making search engines and AI systems understand your business as a distinct real-world thing, with a clear name, category, location, people, products and relationships, rather than as a collection of keywords. It matters for AI because assistants describe and recommend entities. Consistent data, structured markup, sameAs links and independent mentions all strengthen it.
Key takeaways
- Entity SEO makes engines understand your business as one distinct thing with correct facts and relationships.
- AI assistants describe and recommend entities, so weak entity signals cause omission, confusion and errors.
- Consistent listings, clear on-site facts, Organization schema with sameAs and independent mentions build the entity.
From keywords to things
Early SEO was about matching words on a page to words in a query. Modern search engines and AI systems work with entities: people, places, organizations, products and concepts, each with attributes and relationships. Google's Knowledge Graph is the best-known example. When you search a business name and see a panel with its hours, location and reviews, you are seeing an entity Google understands.
Entity SEO is the work of making sure engines recognize your business as one distinct entity and know the right facts about it: what it is, where it is, what it offers, who runs it, how it relates to other things.

Talk to usMore questions
Is entity SEO different from local SEO?
They overlap heavily. Local SEO focuses on ranking in maps and local results, and much of it, such as consistent listings and a complete Business Profile, is entity work. Entity SEO is broader: it also covers brands, people, products and organizations that are not tied to a location, and how they connect.
Does changing my business name hurt my entity?
A rename temporarily weakens it because engines must connect the old and new names. Update every listing and profile, keep a dated announcement page explaining the change, use 301 redirects if the domain changes, reference the former name in schema where appropriate and seek press coverage of the change.
