● The short answer
No. SEO is not dead, but the payoff has shifted. People still run trillions of Google searches a year, and AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot pull from search indexes to build their answers. What changed is that fewer searches end in a click, so the goal now is to be the source an answer cites, not only a blue link.
Key takeaways
- SEO is not dead: Google still handles trillions of searches a year and AI assistants rely on search indexes.
- Clicks per search are falling, especially when AI summaries appear, so rankings alone are worth less traffic than before.
- The same fundamentals (crawlability, clear content, authority) now feed both search rankings and AI citations.
The short version: search grew, clicks shrank
Google said in 2025 that it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year, so the demand side of search has not collapsed. What has changed is what happens after the search. A >Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults' real browsing in March 2025 found that people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when one did not. Only about 1% of those visits included a click on a link inside the summary itself.
Even before AI Overviews, SparkToro's 2024 clickstream study estimated that 58.5% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click. So the honest answer is: SEO still matters, but a ranking that used to send steady traffic now sends less, and the value increasingly comes from being named and cited. Talk to usMore questions
Should I stop investing in SEO and only do AI optimization?
No. AI optimization without SEO fundamentals rarely works, because assistants like Copilot and ChatGPT search lean on Bing and other indexes, and AI Overviews lean on Google's. Keep the technical and content basics, then add the AI layer: answer-first pages, consistent entity information, reviews and credible third-party mentions.
Is my organic traffic dropping because of AI?
Possibly, but check first. Compare Search Console impressions with clicks. If impressions are steady and clicks fell, AI summaries or other zero-click features are a likely cause. If impressions also fell, look for technical problems, lost rankings or seasonality before blaming AI.
