Why is ChatGPT traffic showing as direct?
Some ChatGPT visits, especially from desktop or mobile apps and from copied links, arrive without a referrer or UTM tag, so analytics records them as direct. Links clicked from ChatGPT search results usually carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. A rise in direct traffic to deep pages can be a hint of untracked AI visits.
Can I see which ChatGPT question sent a visitor?
No. ChatGPT does not pass the user's prompt to your site, and OpenAI says conversations stay private. You can see the landing page, which hints at the topic. Bing's AI Performance report does show sampled grounding queries for Copilot and Bing AI citations, which is the closest available view.
