What are UTM parameters, and how do I use them?

● The short answer

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring-sale, that tell analytics tools where a visit came from. Use them on every link you control outside your website: emails, social posts, QR codes, partner links and ads that are not auto-tagged. Keep names consistent or your reports fragment.

Key takeaways

  • UTM parameters are link tags that tell analytics where a visit came from.
  • Always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, as Google recommends.
  • Tag every external link you control, including QR codes and partner links, but never internal links.

How UTM parameters work

When someone clicks a tagged link, analytics tools like Google Analytics 4 read the tags and file the visit under the source, medium and campaign you named. Without tags, a visit from your newsletter might show up as "direct," and a QR code on a flyer might show up as nothing at all.

Google's documentation lists these parameters and says you should always use the first three:

ParameterWhat it meansExample
utm_sourceWhere the traffic comes fromnewsletter, linkedin, chamber
utm_mediumThe type of channelemail, social, paid-social, qr, referral
utm_campaignThe promotion or initiativespring-tuneup-2026
utm_contentWhich creative or linkheader-button, video-a
utm_termPaid keywordbike-repair
utm_idCampaign IDan ID that matches your ad platform
utm_source_platformPlatform that sent the trafficthe ad or email platform

Google also lists utm_creative_format and utm_marketing_tactic, but notes they are not currently reported.

More questions

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not meaningfully if used correctly. Search engines generally treat UTM-tagged URLs as variations of the same page, and a canonical tag on the page points them to the clean version. Problems only arise when sites use UTMs on internal links, which creates duplicate URLs and corrupts analytics. Keep UTMs on external links only.

Do I need UTMs on Google Ads?

Usually not. Google Ads auto-tagging passes detailed click data to Google Analytics automatically when the accounts are linked. Manual UTMs are useful for ad platforms that do not integrate with GA4 as directly, such as some social and programmatic platforms, and for any link you place yourself.
