New year, new default: Gemini 3 now writes your AI Overview

Google made Gemini 3 the default model behind AI Overviews worldwide. Here is what that means for the resolution searches flooding in this month.

The moment. January is resolution season. Gyms, meal kits, financial planners and dentists all get a rush of people asking for help starting something new.

What changed

On January 28, Google made Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally, after starting with harder questions a week earlier. Most AI Overview answers are now written by Google's newest model, not just the complicated ones.

Why it matters

A smarter model reads more of the web before it answers, and it is better at comparing options. When someone asks for the best gym in Wauwatosa for beginners, the answer leans on whatever explains those businesses most clearly: their own pages, their reviews, and what other sites say about them.

2 in 3Google searches now end without a click, so the answer itself is the storefront.

What to do this week

  1. Search the three questions your best customers ask in January, and read the AI answer word for word.
  2. If you are missing, or described wrong, fix the page that should answer that question first.
  3. Ask two happy customers for a review that says what they came in for, in their own words.
