Graduation season, and the biggest change to the search box in 25 years

At I/O, Google said AI Mode hit a billion monthly users and redesigned the search box itself.

The moment. Graduation parties, summer plans and Memorial Day weekend: people asking Google what to do, where to go and who to call.

What changed

On May 19 at Google I/O, Google said AI Mode reached 1 billion monthly users in about a year and AI Overviews reached 2.5 billion. It redesigned the search box to take text, photos, files and video, and said AI Mode and AI Overviews will merge into one AI search experience. It also previewed agents that watch the web and report back.

Why it matters

Search is turning into a conversation. People will ask longer, more specific questions, like a caterer near Bay View that does a 50-person grad party under $1,000. Answers to questions like that come from businesses whose details are specific, current and confirmed by others.

What to do this week

  1. List five long, specific questions a customer might ask about you, and answer each one on your site.
  2. Add a photo to your Google Business Profile that shows what you actually do.
  3. Check that your prices or price ranges are written down somewhere public.
