The moment. On July 16, wildfire smoke pushed Milwaukee's air quality index past 500, the worst on record.
What changed
When the smoke rolled in, people asked their phones whether it was safe to go outside. The answers leaned on sources that were fast, factual and clearly dated. The same month, the July Mention Report found that visitors who arrive from AI search convert at about 14%, against about 3% from regular search.
Why it matters
In a crisis, AI tools quote whoever states the facts plainly and updates first. That is a lesson for every business: a short, clear, dated answer beats a long, polished page. And the people who do click through from AI are ready to act.
What to do this week
- Keep one page on your site that you update the moment something changes: hours, closures, conditions.
- Put the date at the top of anything time-sensitive.
- Check your analytics for visits from ChatGPT and other AI tools. They are few, but they convert.
