State Fair week: real reviews beat shortcuts

Google ran an August spam update and kept folding AI Mode into AI Overviews. Shortcuts got riskier.

The moment. Wisconsin State Fair season: cream puffs, crowds, and a lot of businesses chasing a quick August bump.

What changed

Google ran its August 2026 spam update from August 18 to August 21, after heavy ranking swings earlier in the month. Over the same weeks, Google pushed AI Mode style answers into AI Overviews and added travel features like flight tracking and hotel booking to AI Mode.

Why it matters

Spam updates target shortcuts: bought links, copied pages, fake reviews. AI answers are even pickier, because they lean on sources other people vouch for. The slow path, real reviews and real coverage, is now the fast path.

What to do this week

  1. If anyone sold you links or reviews, stop and ask what was done.
  2. Get one real mention this month: a local news story, a partner blog, a chamber listing.
  3. Reply to your last ten reviews. It shows people, and machines, that someone is home.
